What Sigma and pySigma is
Sigma and pySigma are open-source tooling, not a vendor product. Sigma is a YAML rule format kept by the SigmaHQ community. The main repository offers more than 3,000 detection rules under the Detection Rule License 1.1 (README, read 2026-11-03). pySigma and sigma-cli are under LGPL-2.1.
pySigma parses rules and converts them to queries through installable backend plugins. sigma-cli is the official command-line converter, with convert, list and plugin subcommands. The site scores Sigma on the same eight criteria so a reader can see what the conversion layer gives and what it leaves to the platform. Sigma does not run rules, store them or alert, so pair it with a platform that does.
Vendor description: Sigma is an open, vendor-neutral signature format for describing log-based detections, with more than 3,000 community rules. pySigma and sigma-cli convert those rules into queries for SIEM and other backends. github.com read 2026-11-03
How Sigma and pySigma scores on the rubric
5.50 of 10 across eight weighted criteria. It sits in band C with Anvilogic and Detecteam: totals within 0.25 are a band, not a ladder. Each score has its reason and the page it was read from. The rubric explains the bands.

The 33 capabilities for Sigma and pySigma
documentedpartialnot documented
Where Sigma and pySigma is strong
- The backends page lists Splunk, Kusto (KQL, status Stable) and Elasticsearch, which converts to Lucene, ES|QL with correlations and EQL. Rules from one source reach several SIEMs. sigmahq.io read 2026-11-03
- The main repository states more than 3,000 community rules. The README names the directories rules, rules-emerging-threats, rules-threat-hunting, rules-placeholder and rules-compliance. github.com read 2026-11-03
- The software is free. Rules are under DRL 1.1, and pySigma and sigma-cli are under LGPL-2.1, so there is nothing to quote and nothing to negotiate. github.com read 2026-11-03
Where Sigma and pySigma is behind
- A rule format has no runtime, so no rule health, noise or field drift feature exists to document. Those cells score low by design. github.com read 2026-11-03
- sigma-cli has convert, list and plugin subcommands and pySigma documents rule validation, but no replay or event-based test is described, and there is no deploy step. github.com read 2026-11-03
- No total count of pySigma backends is published. The README names splunk, sysmon, crowdstrike, netwitness and panther packages and stops there. github.com read 2026-11-03
What only Sigma and pySigma publishes
Sigma's own repository runs a GitHub Actions workflow named Sigma Rule Tests that applies yamllint and logsource tests, which checks rule files but does not deploy them. raw.githubusercontent.com read 2026-11-03
Pricing as published for Sigma and pySigma
Free and open source. No commercial price list. Rules are under the Detection Rule License 1.1; pySigma and sigma-cli are under LGPL-2.1. github.com read 2026-11-03

Shortlist Sigma and pySigma when
- You want one rule format that converts to the SIEM you run today and the one you may run next.
- You are starting a detection repository and need free community content to begin with.
- You have a platform that runs, tests and monitors rules, and need only the format and the converter.
